Zoom Teeth Whitening – How The Treatment Process Works?

Content

Zoom is a popular brand of teeth whitening treatment used by dentists throughout Australia and around the world to help people achieve a brighter, whiter smile. Here at Beyond Infinity Dental, we’re proud to offer our patients the latest Zoom teeth whitening treatment carried out chairside and as the name suggests, results can be achieved quickly.

So, why do we need to whiten teeth?

As we age, the enamel of the teeth starts to wear away and exposes the darker dentin underneath. This, in turn, gives our teeth a yellowish/grey tinge. But also, the colour of our teeth is also affected by the foods and drinks that we consume. Tannin-based beverages like coffee, tea and red wine and stain-inducing foods like curry, tomato-based sauces and beetroot can all take their toll on our teeth – as can certain medications or lifestyle habits such as smoking.

For these reasons, many people turn to professional teeth whitening treatment like Zoom.

Zoom teeth whitening – The advantages

There are many advantages to opting for a chairside teeth whitening procedure such as Zoom. Firstly, because whitening treatment is carried out under the control of a dental professional it means that higher percentages of hydrogen peroxide can be used – typically, somewhere between 25% – 35%. This means that results can be achieved faster – Often in as little as an hour.

Secondly, all patients are given a thorough examination before any whitening treatment begins, therefore there is little or no chance of applying the bleaching agent to already sensitive teeth. This may otherwise occur if you opt for any form of DIY over-the-counter treatment.

Finally, because the whole Zoom teeth whitening procedure is under the control of your dentist, any teeth whitening treatment is carried out in a safe but effective way, ensuring that you achieve the agreed level of whiteness but without any of the risk.

So now you know what to expect from your Zoom teeth whitening treatment, let’s take a closer look at how the process works…

Step 1 – Consultation and treatment planning

This is to ensure that (a) you are in good oral health and (b) that you will benefit from a teeth whitening procedure. Collectively, this will help you and our dentist agree on a cosmetic whitening product or technique that best suits your needs and requirements.

During your consultation, our dentist will also take note of any current restorations such as dental crowns or veneers because unfortunately, they won’t respond to teeth bleaching processes.

Step 2 – The Zoom teeth whitening procedure

Before any whitening treatment begins our dentist may suggest a standard teeth cleaning session. This is to ensure your teeth have an even base level of colour – an even starting point from which to work from.

Once this has been carried out the next step in the chairside teeth whitening procedure is to cover the lips and gums leaving the teeth exposed. This is done with a rubber sheet known as a dam. Once covered our dentist begins by evenly applying the whitening agent in the form of a gel to the front surface of the teeth. The gel is then activated by a blue Zoom light. This helps the gel to penetrate the porous surface of the enamel and gradually remove any staining.

The Zoom whitening gel remains on your teeth for around 15 minutes during which time you can sit back and relax. Once 15 minutes is up, our dentist will rinse off the bleaching agent and check to see progress. The gel may then be reapplied again and activated by the light for 2 more sessions of 15 minutes – resulting in 45 minutes of treatment. The gel is then rinsed off for the final time and sensitivity-reducing fluoride toothpaste is applied.

The whole treatment takes up to 1 hour and patients can expect to notice an immediate difference in their smile – although it’s also worth pointing out that the teeth will continue to whiten for several days after the whitening treatment has taken place.

Zoom teeth whitening aftercare – What to expect

Patients will be given a Zoom touch-up kit to be used in the comfort of their own home as and when they need it, but to make the most of their Zoom teeth whitening procedure, you may be advised to avoid certain stain-inducing foods or beverages or consume them in moderation.

Top tip – If you do like a regular cup of coffee or tea then it might be advisable to drink through a straw where possible to avoid contact with your newly whitened teeth.

In addition, if you are a smoker, you should know that nicotine will also stain teeth, even after whitening, so you may want to consider quitting altogether.

Finally, look to maintain good care of your teeth with an effective brushing and flossing regime and combine this with regular trips to the dentist and/or hygienist for check-ups and cleaning.
