What procedural steps are followed to acquire dental implants?
- Initial Consultation and Evaluation. The journey towards dental implants begins with a thorough consultation to assess the patient’s overall oral health, dental history, and specific needs. Patients who are nervous or anxious about dental procedures receive special attention to ensure comfort and understanding of the process.
- Diagnostic Imaging. Detailed X-rays and possibly 3D imaging are conducted to examine the underlying bone structure, identify any areas of concern that might affect the implant process, and plan the implant placement.
- Addressing Oral Health Issues. Any existing oral health issues, such as tooth decay or gum disease, must be treated prior to implant surgery to maximise the chances of success. This might involve fillings, deep cleanings, or other necessary dental procedures.
- Bone Grafting (if necessary). When the jawbone is insufficiently thick or too soft, bone grafting may be necessary to establish a firm base for the implants. This process involves obtaining bone from another body region or utilising synthetic bone substitutes to reinforce the jawbone.
- Performing Oral Surgery. The implant placement is a type of oral surgery done under local anaesthesia, and sedation can be used for nervous or anxious patients. A small incision is made in the gum to expose the bone, and a special drill is used to prepare the bone for the implant.
- Bone Healing and Integration. Upon implant placement, the osseointegration process begins, characterised by the jawbone bonding and fusing with the surface of the dental implant. This pivotal healing period, integral for establishing a durable foundation for the new tooth, often extends over several months.
- Preparation for the Prosthetic. Once osseointegration is complete, an abutment is attached to the implant. This component serves as a connector for the new crown, bridge, or denture. Another minor surgery might be required to attach the abutment if it wasn’t placed during the initial procedure.
- Crafting and Fitting the Prosthetic. The final step involves cosmetic dentistry to create and fit the crown, bridge, or denture that will be attached to the abutment. Impressions of the mouth are taken to craft a prosthetic that matches the colour, shape, and size of the remaining healthy teeth, ensuring a natural look.
- Post-Procedure Care and Maintenance. After the prosthetic is fitted, regular follow-up visits are essential to ensure the implant is functioning well and the surrounding gum and bone remain healthy. Patients are given detailed care instructions to help maintain the integrity of the implant and their overall oral health.
What signs suggest the presence of a cavity?
Signs of a cavity typically include toothache, sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods and drinks, and visible holes or pits in the teeth. You might also notice staining on the surface of the tooth.
Could the absence of teeth contribute to gum disease?
Yes, the absence of teeth can contribute to gum disease because missing teeth can lead to bone loss and changes in the alignment of remaining teeth, which creates spaces more prone to plaque accumulation and gum infection.
Note: Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
